Cellulite, the lumpy curse
Brisbane, Australia – 18 May 2006 “If you’ve got it, flaunt it” is the old adage, but it doesn’t apply to cellulite. According to the Harvard Women's Health Watch 85% of women will be affected by cellulite. Men can also be affected where it generally appears around the stomach. Frustratingly cellulite can just appear and even more frustratingly it won’t just go away.
While cellulite is mainly an aggregation of fat cells just under the skin, it’s the way it forms in pockets between interlocking fibres of collagen that makes it difficult to remove. “As the cellulite develops it damages blood vessels immediately around it” says Jean-Paul Staats owner of The Health & Healing Wellness Centre. The Damaged blood vessels can’t remove fluids and waste from the affected area causing the situation to worsen. “And this is why diet does not have a lot of impact in treating cellulite” states Mr Staats.
Technically cellulite is not considered a “Medical Condition” but try telling that to someone that is suffering it. In a bid to attack cellulite there seems to be an endless range of treatments and products that make claims about removing it. A search on the American Federal Drug Administrations (FDA) website and the website of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) results in an endless list of actions that these Government agencies have undertaken to make various promoters withdraw misleading claims.
Approved treatments include Endermologie, a system that massages the skin breaking the fibres and encouraging blood flow in the affected area. The FDA has stated that Endermologie treatment results in a temporary reduction of Cellulite and improves a person’s appearance (around the affected area). Developed in France the treatment has been used since 1996. Endermologie is non-invasive and uses rollers and vacuum to massage the skin. The combined action of the rollers and vacuum break up the Cellulite pockets and smooth the skin.
“Results can last somewhere between several months and a few years” says Mr Staats. “And improvements can begin to show after just a few sessions”. “Sessions last 35 minutes and we recommend 16 sessions in a course. It’s important to remember that Endermologie does not assist the break up of deeper fat layers” advises Mr Staats.
Endermologie can be used in conjunction with Liposuction to deliver a greater body shaping treatment. Liposuction removes deep layers of fat in surgical procedure, Endermologie can help reduce the formation of scar tissue after surgery. “Like everything in health planning, there is not just one solution, taking a holistic view of what is the best outcome for the patient is more critical than implementing a particular treatment.” concludes Mr Staats.
